Google Magic Tricks Biography
Every year, Taos Feeds Taos goes off like a magic trick: People show up, boxes are filled and somehow 1,200 people are fed for the holidays.
To longtime volunteer Ernestina Córdova, despite a lot of preparation, it’s nothing short of the miracle.
“I think God takes care of us because it just happens, you know?” Córdova said to volunteers last Thursday (Dec. 20) at the National Guard Armory.
For the past 27 years, Taos Feeds Taos manages to offer boxes of food to people in need. This year is no different; the service upped its number of recipients by at least 100.
For volunteers like food coordinator Linda Knief, Taos Feeds Taos sates the soul.
“For me, it feeds the need to be a part of something greater than myself,” Knief said. “It’s all about the giving. It inspires you.”
For the recipients, Taos Feeds Taos is literally a lifesaver over the holidays, providing individuals and families with everything from apples to posole to tortillas and canned goods.
Everyone from high school mariachi students to the New Mexico State Police pitch in to help. On a frigid morning last week, Sgt. Travis Skinner and fellow officer Victor Flores showed up to help make food deliveries to homebound recipients.
“We’ve been doing this for so long, I’ve seen years where we could spend most of the day delivering,” Skinner said.
To Skinner, Taos Feeds Taos is a chance to give back to the community he helps keep safe. It’s a duty Skinner takes just as seriously as his role as an officer, a reprieve from traffic enforcement and emergency calls for service.
He spent some 10 minutes getting accurate directions to one person’s home after Google Maps claimed her road didn’t exist.

The boys are not still on a dock in Washington State beating holy hell-o out of each other because that’s the way Winchesters process their feelings.  Instead they’re at Fat Mack’s Bar-B-Q Rib Shack having a relatively civil and adult (for them) conversation about Benny over the hood of the Impala.  I guess Dean is right.  People do change.  Still, Sam’s aneurism face is having a hard time processing how Dean can go from killing Amy to letting Benny live and accepting that he’s not eating people.  What Benny did for Dean in Purgatory not withstanding, the rule – Dean’s rule – has always been ‘You kill the monster’.

” … He’s my friend, Sam.  Look, Benny slips up and some other hunter turns his lights out, so be it.”

But it’s not going to be Dean.

They motor to Missouri in what I can only assume is an awkward, painful, B-face filled silence.  They arrive at the home of Mary and Chester Lew.  She kicked out the jams jack from under the car he was working on and took off half his head.  She claims to have blacked out with no memory of the killing.  Sam thinks it sounds like a non-supernatural insanity case.  How is this their kind of thing?

“Because, Sam.  Kevin’s in the wind, okay?  You’re sulking around like a eunuch in a whorehouse, and I can’t help but ask myself, when is decapitation not my thing?”

They flash their badges at local law only to be told that a Texas Ranger is already on the case.  There stands Garth in all his cowboy hat and fringy leather jacket glory.  “What?  Come on, I look like a funeral director in [a suit].”  He is overjoyed to see the boys and completely breaks character, throwing his arms around Sam and Dean each in turn.  “Forgot he was a hugger.”  One of Garth’s three cell phones rings (Kriss Kross’s “Jump”) and he quickly and expertly advises another hunter on how to deal with a revenant.  This entire conversation takes place barely three steps from the civilian Garth was just interviewing.  The civvie just stands in the background pretending LALALALALALA HE CAN’T HEAR THEM.  Sam at least takes an uneasy look around, because seriously.  Three steps.  Dean follows Garth’s side of the conversation intently, trying to make sense of what’s happening right in front of him.  Since when is giving advice Garth’s job?  Sam has a revelation.  “Hold up … are you the new Bobby?”

“You shut your mouth!”

Yes, he is.

“YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH!! … What??”

“It was a weird time.”  Bobby was gone, the Winchesters were MIA, and someone had to step in and take up the slack.  Garth suggests they get back to work and talk about it later.

“Did Garth just tell us what to do?”

Most countries send only their chosen Santa to the competition in Gällivare, a mining town of some 8,500 inhabitants located about 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This year, the Hong Kong delegation included its three previous Santa competition entrants and a photographer who doubled as an English-language interpreter for the Cantonese speakers.

Mr. Ho said he was initially intimidated by the competitors, including Santas from the Netherlands, Estonia and Sweden, who looked as if "they lived in a forest and had their own deer." The solution was simply to "work harder," he said.

Hong Kong's delegation embraced the Swedish crowd, making balloon animals for the children, despite temperatures as low as 12 degrees Fahrenheit. At one point the Hong Kong team got separated from the rest of the international Santa delegation because they were socializing in Gällivare's town square.

"For me that's a good thing, but for the schedule it's not," said the contest organizer Mr. Svalenström, manager of the Gällivare Tourism Office.

Paradise Yamamoto, Japan's Santa and the only other contestant from Asia, said the Hong Kong Santas' style stood out as very "fancy, pop, flashy."

"All the rest are pretty normal Santas…if you can say that," Mr. Svalenström said.

Hong Kong's choice of a young, thin Santa, "shows they were thinking about winning," said Santa Paradise, who celebrated his 50th birthday at the Arctic event. A rotund, older Santa wouldn't fare well in events that require you to run on ice or handle reindeer, he said. "You feel like you're risking your life sometimes."

On game day, Santa Rainbow got off to a rough start in the reindeer riding contest. The mechanical beast bucked him off in a few seconds.
